Residents of Wilson Hall were evacuated this morning after a small fire caused minor damage. According to the a press release from the Flagstaff Fire Department, the fire started at 4:15 a.m. The fire was only in 1 room and the resident woke up to his smoke detector and quickly evacuated, escaping without any injuries. Other residents of Wilson were relocated to Sechrist, Riley and Allen halls for an hour as the fire department finished…

Two speakers and many other politically active women attended “Women in Politics,” a lecture organized by the Commission on the Status of Women at NAU.
CSW’s mission on campus is to help provide an environment that allows for equal and full opportunity for women.

On Thursday, Feb. 21 and Friday, Feb. 22, three representatives from Invisible Children Inc. arrived at NAU to talk about the tragedies going on in Uganda.
Invisible Children Inc., a non-profit organization based in San Diego, has 10 teams made up of “roadies,” each assigned to a specific area of the U.S. and aimed to spread awareness about the atrocities occuring in Africa.

About 25 NAU students traveled to the Capitol on Tuesday, Feb. 19 to mark the 21st Annual Student Lobby Day. The Arizona Students’ Association campaign “Brighten Arizona’s Future, Invest in Higher Education” coordinated the event.

Federal legislation has recently passed that enables students to become better consumers when taking out private student loans.
The College Opportunity and Affordability Act, introduced on Feb. 6, was voted through the U.S. House of Representatives on Feb. 7 by a vote of 354-58. Much like past legislation, this bill aims to make college education affordable and accessible.

Michael Parenti, an award-winning and internationally acclaimed author and lecturer, visited NAU Feb. 12 to speak publicly about what he titled “Political Perception, Public Deception.”

Ben Henneke, president of the Clean Air Action Corporation (CAAC) and founder of The International Small Group and Tree Planting program (TIST), spoke to a crowd of 20-30 students and faculty members on Thursday, Feb. 7.

With the beginning of the spring 2008 semester, NAU marks its highest spring enrollment in the university’s history.
Spring 2008 enrollment totaled at 20,224 students at the Mountain Campus and other sites including NAU-Yuma and NAU-North Valley. This was nearly 6 percent higher than spring 2007’s 19,095 students, with 12,859 at the Flagstaff campus, and an additional 4,418 enrolled throughout the state.
